Aeon Retail, Japan Airlines (JAL) and KDDI Smart Drone signed a tripartite agreement on June 2 to consider the use of drones for social implementation in the retail sector and socializing drone logistics. Under the agreement, there are demonstrations at a store scheduled to open in 2025 in Shimosuwa-cho, Suwa-gun, Nagano Prefecture, and work to expand to other areas.
Against the backdrop of an aging population due to fewer children and the logistics issues of 2024, sustainable store management in the region requires new approaches, such as delivery through new channels. To address these issues, we will optimize and streamline the process (supply chain) from product purchase to delivery to consumers using drones and digital technologies, including the creation of a new last mile aimed at enabling a new shopping experience.
Local stores serve as disaster preparedness bases, providing shelter and delivering supplies to affected areas. Consider the use of drones. In addition, as people gather and interact as a base for urban living, we will facilitate the creation of next-generation stores that strengthen ties with local communities, while fostering expectations and understanding of the community where drones play a positive role through drone experience activities.
Aeon Retail will tap into regional needs, plan solutions to meet those needs, and plan an overall OMO (Online Merges with Offline) strategy utilizing drones and digital technology while collaborating with local governments and related businesses.
JAL and KDDI Smart Drone will jointly utilize the operational achievements and technologies of drones in various fields, such as operation management systems that enable remote control and autonomous flight, investigate drone operations, coordinate with relevant government departments, and support local operations. We aim to achieve efficient operations with safety as our primary concern.
